Ballycastle Men’s Shed

A Place to Belong

"When I joined my local Men’s Shed and came for the first time, I remember it wasn’t the question of ‘Who are you?’ – but ‘Do you want tea or coffee?’"

That simple welcome captures exactly what makes the Ballycastle Men's Shed so special.

Established as Northern Ireland’s 100th Men’s Shed, the group provides a welcoming space where men of all ages and backgrounds can come together to share skills, experiences, friendship, and support in an informal, pressure-free environment.

The Shed’s journey began in 2023 with just eight members. With support from Solas and accommodation provided at Enterprise Causeway’s Ballycastle business premises, the group transformed a previously unused site into a thriving community hub. After months of hard work developing governance structures and improving the facilities, the Shed officially opened its doors in early 2024.

Since then, membership has grown steadily to more than 50 members. What started as a small gathering has become a vibrant community space featuring a social area, seven workshop sheds, a greenhouse, two polytunnels, and several raised planting beds.

The variety of activities on offer reflects the diverse interests and talents of the members. From mechanics, woodworking, and model making to music, gardening, talks, and social events, there is something for everyone. Members have also enjoyed organised trips to destinations including Rathlin Island, Ulster Folk Museum, the Ulster Transport Museum, and the Irish Open Snooker.

Of course, no Men’s Shed would be complete without plenty of tea, biscuits, and good conversation. Members have even been treated to fresh cakes shared by neighbours such as Puffin Patisserie, helping to strengthen the sense of community across the wider site.

Today, the Ballycastle Men’s Shed continues to grow and evolve. Entirely member-led, the group offers a place where friendships are formed, skills are shared, and people support one another. By helping to reduce loneliness and isolation while encouraging physical activity, creativity, and social connection, the Shed is making a real difference to the lives of local men.

New members are always welcome, and anyone with an interest in getting involved is encouraged to come along, have a chat, and maybe start with a cup of tea or coffee.
