Celebrating Irish Linen through Sustainable Craft
Jill’s love affair with Irish linen began in 2017 with a chance discovery of a flax mill in Dungiven.
The texture, history, and craftsmanship of the fabric struck an instant chord, especially as both her grandfathers had grown flax. “The moment I stepped into that mill, I felt a connection unlike anything else,” she recalls.
With a background in interiors and textiles, Jill founded Linen Lane in 2018. From understated lampshades paired with sustainable and vintage bases, to cushions, art prints, merino wreaths and roman blinds, every piece is handmade with intention and respect for natural materials. “Sustainability has always been at the heart of my business. I’m committed to creating products that celebrate Irish heritage while honouring the environment.”
Her journey found strong support through The Designerie in Bushmills, a community of makers where Jill’s confidence flourished. “Before, I was more comfortable behind the scenes, but The Designerie has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. I now love engaging with customers and sharing my passion for linen.”
Recognition came in 2021 when Jill was named a finalist for the Environmental Sustainability Award at the Causeway Chamber Awards. Soon after, she was commissioned by a London lighting firm to produce 215 hand-stitched linen lampshades for Room2 Belfast, the city’s first hometel. With sustainability central to both businesses, it was the perfect fit.
Beyond creating, Jill shares her skills through workshops, helping others discover the joy of working with linen and natural fibres. Her popular Revamp Your Lamp service also gives old lampshades new life, combining creativity with reuse.
Most recently, Jill and four fellow makers moved into the newly restored Courthouse in Bushmills, opening new opportunities for collaboration. “With the support of The Designerieand the exciting opportunities ahead at the Courthouse, I’m ready to embrace this next chapter.”
