Bee Curious NI

From Hive to Habitat: Inspiring a New Generation Through Bee Curious NI

Nestled on the North Coast, Bee Curious NI is a unique nature-based experience created by master beekeeper Sam Laverty. Set within a beautiful setting that includes ancient woodland and bluebell glades, the business offers immersive beekeeping experiences designed to educate and inspire visitors about the vital role bees play in our ecosystem.

Sam, a highly experienced beekeeper and education officer with the Roe Valley Beekeepers, has spent years sharing his knowledge with others, teaching up to 20 new beekeepers each year. Through Bee Curious NI, he is now expanding that passion beyond the classroom—inviting individuals, families and children to step into the world of bees, learn about their importance, and experience nature up close.

The idea for the business was sparked by a fellow beekeeper who recognised the potential of Sam’s surroundings.

“He said, ‘you’re sitting on a goldmine here’—with the woodland, the environment, it’s the perfect place to create something like this.”

Before starting Bee Curious NI, Sam had already enjoyed a long and successful career, spending over 30 years in the steel industry, including roles as a director and working on major international projects. After retiring, he found himself ready for a new challenge—one that combined his love of nature with a desire to educate others.

After discovering Enterprise Causeway through social media, Sam applied for support and began developing his idea into a business.

Like many start-ups, one of the biggest challenges was the financial investment required to get up and running. From specialist equipment to setting up the experience itself, the costs quickly added up. However, with support from Enterprise Causeway, Sam was able to access guidance and funding that helped bring his vision to life.

Through the programme, he received one-to-one advice, support in building a website, and a grant that enabled him to purchase essential equipment including a laptop and printer.

“The support was extremely helpful—they gave me ideas, direction and helped get everything up and running.”

While still in its early stages, Bee Curious NI is already generating strong interest. In just 28 days, Sam’s social media presence reached over 9,000 people—clear evidence of growing curiosity and demand for nature-based, educational experiences.

At its heart, the business is about more than beekeeping. Visitors can enjoy guided walks through woodland, meet a range of friendly animals, and gain a deeper appreciation for the natural environment.

For Sam, the most rewarding part is sharing that passion with others.

“I want people, especially children, to understand what bees bring to society and why they matter.”

As he looks ahead, his focus is on building awareness and encouraging more people to visit, learn and engage with nature in a meaningful way.

“Don’t be afraid to have a go—just keep trying and don’t give up.”

With a strong foundation, expert knowledge and a truly unique setting, Bee Curious NI is set to become a standout experience on the North Coast—connecting people with nature, one hive at a time.
