Compass Advocacy Network
You CAN Make a Difference
What began in 1997 as a small group of passionate individuals with a shared vision has grown into one of the region’s most impactful community organisations. Today, Compass Advocacy Network (CAN) supports more than 500 children, young people, and adults across the Causeway Coast and Glens area, along with their families and carers.
From the outset, CAN has been committed to empowering people with learning disabilities, autism, and mental health challenges to reach their full potential in work, social, and community life. By creating supportive spaces, providing opportunities, and encouraging meaningful participation, the organisation has helped thousands of people build confidence, independence, and connections.
Over the years, CAN has expanded its services significantly, delivering community engagement programmes, support services, educational workshops, and innovative projects designed to improve lives. Key milestones have included the opening of its first premises in Ballymoney in 1999, the development of social enterprises such as CAN Can Bazaar, and the launch of popular initiatives including Best Buddies, Explore, Pathways, and the BLAST project.
When the pandemic created new challenges, CAN adapted quickly by moving services online and launching CAN TV, ensuring participants could remain connected and supported during a difficult period.
In 2021, the organisation took another significant step forward with the acquisition of the historic 11-acre Lislagan Farm. The site is now home to one of CAN’s most ambitious projects to date – the development of a Respite Village. This transformative initiative will restore a 150-year-old cottage and create a dedicated respite space for families across Ireland, providing much-needed support and opportunities for rest and recovery.
Throughout its journey, CAN has remained focused on people, community, and inclusion. Its work demonstrates how a simple idea, driven by determination and compassion, can grow into a movement that changes lives.
Enterprise Causeway has been proud to support CAN through leadership development, design thinking programmes, and opportunities for participants to engage in creative activities at the Courthouse. These experiences have enabled individuals to build new skills, connect with others, and become more involved in their local community.
CAN's story is one of vision, resilience, and hope — a reminder that with the right support, everyone can make a difference.
