Causeway Giants Wheelchair Basketball Club
A Giant Legacy for the Causeway Community
When Enterprise Causeway first met Helen Logan at the CelebrateHER event in 2024, it quickly became clear that her story—and that of the Causeway Giants Wheelchair Basketball Club—was one of determination, inclusion, and community spirit.
Founded in 2019 by the late Stephen Heron, the club brings together more than 20 members from across the Causeway Coast, from Larne to Portrush. Training twice a week at Ulster University's fully accessible sports complex, members and their families have built much more than a basketball team—they have created a supportive community based on friendship, resilience, and belonging.
The club’s Lil’ Giants youth programme has grown significantly, providing young people with opportunities to participate in sport, develop confidence, and build lasting friendships. Several players have progressed to higher levels of competition, demonstrating the positive impact of accessible sporting opportunities.
Through Enterprise Causeway’s Connecting Communities project, club members received training to become coaches, helping introduce beginners and young people to wheelchair basketball. Meanwhile, the Connecting Youth programme has supported participants in developing new skills and experiences, including creative projects that brought club members together outside of sport.
For Helen Logan, the club has been life-changing. Living with spina bifida, she began using a wheelchair during the COVID-19 pandemic and experienced increasing isolation. Joining the Giants marked a turning point, providing not only a sporting outlet but a strong network of support for both herself and her family.
Inspired by her experiences, Helen went on to launch Motivated & Able with support from Enterprise Causeway and Go Succeed. Through coaching, motivational speaking, and movement workshops, the business helps people living with chronic pain build confidence and regain control of their wellbeing.
Helen’s achievements have been recognised through awards including Inspirational Woman of the Year NI and a Spirit of Sport Award, shared with her daughter Sarah.
Today, the Causeway Giants continue to champion inclusion through wheelchair basketball and other adaptive sports initiatives, including monthly adaptive pickleball sessions. Their impact extends far beyond the court, demonstrating the power of sport to improve wellbeing, foster inclusion, and create opportunities for people of all abilities.
